Focus on Namibia
26 April – 8 May 2009

Namibia is a land of contrasts - towering sand dunes, shimmering plains, relentless sunshine, mountains, gorges and some of Africa’s most interesting and varied wildlife and national parks. It is also large and that is why we have decided to make this a “winged safari” allowing more time for photography and less time traveling between the areas. This safari takes you through Namibia and introduces you to its animals, cultural and scenic beauty. The safari has been specially designed for Focus on Africa. For example, we begin our safari in Sossusvlei where we spend 3 days so we have more oppotunities to catch the early morning last afternoon light on the dunes.

The lodges and camps used on this safari are similar to those featured in On Safari.

Sossusvlei - Waterburg
Today you will fly by light aircraft to the Waterburg area. In addition game drives, night drives and walks are enjoyed on the private reserve. Wild leopards are fed every night, giving us a chance to photograph these magnificent predators from the safety of a hide. We also track cheetah on foot in the rehabilitation area. Orphaned cheetah viewing is included in the daily activities.

Saturday - Sunday, 2 – 3 May 2009
Waterburg - Damaraland
This morning we will fly to Damaraland. Our private concession supports a healthy population of desert adapted black rhino and elephants. There are also large populations of Hartman's mountain zebra, giraffe, oryx, springbok and kudu. The predator population is the largest outside of the Etosha National Park with over 100 lions, cheetah, leopard, brown and spotted hyena. Bird life is prolific and diverse with most of Namibia's endemics present. Activities on offer are rhino tracking on foot or by vehicle; night drives and full day outings (with a picnic lunch) on the concession. We spend two days tracking rhino both on foot and in Land Rovers

Monday - Tuesday, 4 - 5 May 2009
Damaraland - Hartmann Valley in Northwest Namibia
Today you will fly to the northern most region of Namibia. We share this region with wonderful Himba people who are some of the last true nomadic people in Africa. The Kunene River is the only permanent source of water in the whole region and the river creates a lush oasis along its banks surrounded by rugged mountains and sand dunes. We spend time in breath taking landscape scenes in the Hartmann Valley, to the south of the camp, with herds of springbok, ostrich and even leopard. We traverse sand dunes on 4x4 safaris and boat on the Kunene River that becomes the focus for the area. On the boat trips, one can watch Kunene crocodiles basking the riverbanks, while looking out for Southern Africa's rarest bird, the Cinderella waxbill. Walking trails in the remote mountain and river valleys will always be a highlight for those who enjoy foot safaris. Cafema is often visited by the native Ovahimba families who live in the nearby vicinity which give the guests the chance to learn all about their lifestyles and traditions.
